<image:caption>Sky Kim 'Multiverse Series - Untitled 5' (2019) watercolor, acrylic, and Swarovski crystals on ... [+] CHASE CONTEMPORARY Glistening blue and green orbs and biomorphic shapes erupt from a dense black background, drawing our gaze into and around the pulsating canvas. Oscillating like a close-up of atoms, we confront our position in a hypothetical collection of potentially diverse observable universes. Sky Kim masterfully paints in watercolor, emphasizing the glint of each atomic pearl with acrylic, and illuminating the multiverse with Swarovski crystals. The eye journeys through Kim’s philosophical, spiritual, scientific, and creative processes via the 45-inch-by-34-inch Multiverse Series- Untitled 5 (2019). We float into her multiverse, buoyed by celestial and pelagic vibrations. Her meticulous brushstrokes and formidable composition turn us inward and outward, surveying the past and contemplating the present and future. My visual travels through Kim’s Multiverse conjure solace and compel me to engage with life’s salient questions. Exploring Kim’s Multiverse, I recall reading weeks ago how scientists have challenged the prevailing view that asteroids and comets brought water to Earth from regions of the Solar System beyond the frost line, to discover that most of the hydrogen was already here, waiting for Earth to form. “I believe we are all multi-dimensional beings. I believe we exist in multiple dimensions, simultaneously. This is from my strong interest in quantum physics, and my interest in spirituality,” Kim said in a phone interview. Quantum physics, the study of matter and energy at the most fundamental level, seeks to understand the behavior of matter and light on the atomic and subatomic scales. Through Kim’s imagery, we ponder the impact of minuscule objects, such as electrons and photons, the quantum phenomena that permeate our existence. Multiverse Series- Untitled 5 is among 25 of Kim’s enthralling works that will be on view from April 7 through May 1 for a solo show, Cosmic Breath, at Chase Contemporary in New York’s SoHo neighborhood. Born in Seoul, South Korea, Kim earned a M.F.A in Painting from Pratt Institute, and lives and works in New York. She borrows from her life experiences, various philosophies, and the ancient science of sacred geometry, which asserts that certain geometrical shapes and proportions embody sacred meanings. “I use repetition of circles and lines to represent the cosmic significance of geometry. There are certain rules and patterns in the cycle of life, so I use a lot of circles. To me, a circle is an absolute form you can find in nature. So when you draw a circle, there's no beginning or end. They always come back to the point where you started, just like our life process. The will of life. Reincarnation,” said Kim. “Again, in this respect, time is not linear. Time is rather circular in my understanding.” A multifaceted creative powerhouse, Kim currently spends 12 to 14 hours a day in her studio, working seven days a week, with an occasional Sunday break. Each work inspires us and invites us into her sweeping narratives, comprising a continuum where the series engage in dialogue with each other and the viewer. Transport yourself to a world of infinite possibilities with Portal Series - Untitled 3 (2018), the sanguine background evoking a lush, velvety sensation, juxtaposing the dazzling black pearls that summon the protective properties of hematite or obsidian, and surrender to the array of beckoning spirals that soften toward the radiating center. “We come in and out of portals all the time,” said Kim, who embraces the five elements theory that everything in nature is made up of fire, water, air, earth, and spirit. “There's no logic to it. It's just the energy I have.” The mandala and radiant orbs, or black pearls, recur in Untitled (Flamingo Mandala) (2021), this time the symbolic representation of the universe is buffered by an ebullient background of pink feathers. When flamingos eat algae and brine shrimp, their bodies metabolize the pigments, turning their feathers pink. “During the lockdown, I couldn't go to my studio for three months, so I set up a studio in my back room. I wasn't able to work on a large-scale work, so I started doing small sketchbook pieces, and I started using colored pencils. The design used for this series was very monochromatic, like occasional blue and occasional red, but during the lockdown I started using colors, even pink. Before it was unthinkable using pink, like no way, it’s too girly-girly, too Barbie-Barbie. But with a pandemic going on and the future is so unknown and everything is chaotic and unpredictable, I just started using colors and pink became my buddy,” Kim recalled with delight. “Now I can't use pink enough. I was dreaming of flamingos, because during the lockdown I wanted to go to someplace warm and peaceful.” Kim used a needle to create the smallest glowing elements of the galaxy in Multiverse Series - Untitled 1 (2019), conjuring an ethereal mood that whisks us away from our immediate reality. “On an unconscious level, my work is largely influenced by the loss of my twin sister, who was a stillborn. I didn't know until I was 12 or 13, but then I realized that must be the source of the emptiness inside,” Kim confided. “It was really hard to carry that feeling, because before I knew about myself being a twin, I had this big whole in my heart. I still do. So I tried to find a way to fill the gap. I have so many questions about life, like why I am ‘here’ when she's ‘there,’ somewhere ‘up there?’ I don't know where she is, but there must be a reason why I'm still here. There must be much more to the reality we call life. That's whyI started turning to spiritual books and going to churches, to find an answer. It was like a big question mark hanging over my head all the time. That's how I started seeking answers. And I found a partial, but critical, answer to most of my questions, which is reincarnation. To me, that explains a lot of incomprehensible phenomena in life.” Get swept away by Kim’s Scroll Series, following the rhythmic patterns as they caress the ground. Kim said people often wrongly assume the series is rooted in her Asian cultural background, but it’s simply an extension of her vast and evolving creative process. “I usually get a roll of paper and cut into certain sizes. One day, however, I wanted to continue the good flow of energy I was having so I decided to paint the whole roll. I thought, why not? That was how my scroll series began. I record my time, space and raw emotions at the moment on 30 foot-long scrolls,” Kim explained. “As writers use old-fashioned typewriters, I leave my own traces of being in a timely-manner on 30 foot- long paper. I like the fact that it’s a 2D work but the way it is displayed is 3D, like an installation piece. During my studio practice, what I try to focus on the most is creating a "positive energy" which clears any blockage that might dwell in my unconsciousness and interferes with my creative thought process.” Despite the broad range of inspiration, spanning sacred geometry, quantum physics, reincarnation, and all life’s major questions, Kim leaves her work open to interpretation. “I want my viewers to see what they need to see,” she said. Everything, including life or death occurs in the present moment. Therefore, the moment of now is timeless and abundant. Our ability to see and hear depends upon our detection of energy traveling at different wavelengths of vibration. Vision and sound are the products of atomic particles in space colliding with one another and emitting patterns of energy. I simply capture these patterns of energy, the residue of my vibration in my work. Everything around us, about us, among us, within us, and between us is made of atoms and molecules vibrating in space. Although we define our self as solid, we are made of trillions of cells, gallons of water and ultimately everything about us exists in a constant and dynamic state of activity and movement in the name of evolving process."</image:caption>

<image:title>Press - Arts Observer - ‘Sacred Geometries’: Chashama Exhibit Features Works Rooted in Nature by Sky Kim</image:title>
<image:caption>It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference. NEW YORK—Geometric shapes and organic patterns and textures, are voluminous, cyclical and endlessly repeated throughout the watercolors in “Sacred Geometries.” The Chashama exhibit includes 10 works on paper by Sky Kim that each have distinct ethereal and spiritual qualities that consume the gallery space. It’s an intriguing vibe, the viewer wants to know more about the artist and understand the inspirations for her work. Arts Observer reached out to Sky Kim to learn more about her watercolors. The Korean-born artist studied at Pratt Institute and lives and works in New York. She says the loss of her twin sister at birth has remained with her, influencing her philosophy on life and factoring greatly in her creative process. The following are excerpts from her responses to several questions via email. Belief in Reincarnation My inspiration comes from my philosophical belief in “reincarnation.” My work is largely influenced by the loss of my twin sister at birth on an unconscious level. Ever since I was little, I have always felt empty inside for no particular reason. I’ve tried to figure out why I am here when she is not? What is my life purpose? I looked everywhere to find an answer, including spiritual books, religions, meditation, yoga, etc. I finally found a partial answer to my questions, the incarnation, which explains many things in my opinion. Shape and Life Through numerous lives, we complete our life cycle and become spiritually advanced. This realization influenced my work a great deal. I began to use the repetition of circles and wiggly lines to create patterns that represent the wheel of life—the reincarnation. A circle is an absolute form you can find in nature. When you draw a circle, there is no beginning or end. You always come back to the point where you started, just like our life process, the principle of Yin and Yang. How the Scrolls Came About I usually get a roll of paper and I used to cut it into certain sizes. One day, I just wanted to continue the nice flow of energy I was having, thinking to myself “why not paint the whole roll?” That’s how I started the scroll series. I record my raw emotions of the moment on 30 foot-long scrolls just like writers used to use an old-fashioned typewriter to tell their stories. Labor of Love Since my work is a labor-intensive, detailed one, it takes a long time to be completed. I work on one piece at a time. One of the scrolls took me almost six months to finish (above) and that piece is the one that seems to speak to people. Viewers often tell me that it feels like something is emitting from the work. They probably feel the energy “Ki,” or vibration, that I put in during the creation of the work. The Takeaway I hope that my work gives viewers an opportunity to ask themselves who they were before and who they are now. Following one dot after another all the way into the core of my painting and connecting dots of their own life might lead my viewers to the center of their being and discover wholeness. Sky Kim’s “Sacred Geometries” includes 10 works on exhibit in a vacant storefront space at 655 3rd Avenue (between 41st and 42nd streets). The Chishama show is on view from March 13 to March 26, 2012. <image:title>Press - Artlog - Artlog/Artist Spotlight: Sky Kim</image:title>
<image:caption>Artlog spotlights the Arlo/Artists Portfolio of Sky Kim, who describes her own art as “vaguely sensual, obsessively organic, and oddly alive.” Her paintings, drawings, and installations are influenced largely by the loss of her twin sister at birth. They are disturbing, yet comforting; abstract, yet organic. As she herself says, the extreme tensions present in her work are ones that every viewer can subconsciously relate to on some level. There is a constant tug of war embedded in the organic undulations in your paintings and drawings. The shapes are comforting, yet dizzying; fluid, yet stagnant; organic, yet abstract; delicate, yet obsessive. Do you feel that producing art is a way for you to appease a tension within you? Kim: Producing art is a way for me to narrow the gaps between my ego and inner self. This ‘self’ is dominantly controlled by the mind and often tricks me into valuing what I am not. I deal with these conflicts on both a consciousness and unconscious level in my work; I create a dimension of stillness, ironically through movement. I use dense patterns as a tool to illustrate the life cycle and to capture the silence of a solid stone under microscope. You’ll be surprise to see that there is a lot of movement going on inside of this stillness. I simply lay out the whole process of my struggle on a piece of paper. You never had the opportunity to share a life with your twin sister, who was stillborn. Do you feel that your art is a way for you to fulfill this other half that you knew was missing, even when you hadn’t known about your sister? How did you feel when you learned about her, and did you produce any art right after this discovery? Kim: I believe remembering her in my art is a way to complete my being as every old and new cell of my body remembers every minute I was with her. I first learned about her at age 11 and I understood right away why I had felt empty inside and was always seeking images in the clouds and horizon as a little girl. I have never stopped seeking answers as an adult. Are most of your drawings dictated by a subconscious longing for the unobtainable, the meta-physical? Kim: I believe so. First I listen to my noisy, scattered mind: the conscious presence, then the deeper self behind or underneath the humongous ego, which causes a serious leakage of vital energy. Then I let these noises subside and gradually sense the stillness that was obscured by my mind just a moment ago. As every sound is born out of silence, I try to listen to the stillness. Then, I feel a subtle emanation of the joy of Being and the power of potential energy and this raised vibration creates the work. Do you believe it is necessary for your viewers to know your life story (your twin was a still born) when looking at your work, or do you think your work is powerful enough without this background story? Kim: No, I want my audience to experience emotions, personally and privately; and be dependent on their own background so that they see what they need to see and feel what they need to feel at the moment. Hopefully, it helps one to understand the purpose of each life we choose to come back and live by recognizing ourselves as the significant creators of every corner of our lives and circumstances. Have you always produced drawings/paintings/installations that exude this vertiginous, almost obsessive quality derived from repetitious patterns? Do you see your work relating to that of Yayoi Kusama in any way? Kim: A circle is the most absolute, perfect shape you can find in nature. The circles represent vitality, the non-stop evolutionary life cycle and movement that is going on in the center of my work. These repeated circles, lines, dots, and curves never cease evolving in their reach for the ultimate goal – the higher self. Repeating these patterns is like reciting a Mantra in the state of true inner peace. I wasn’t familiar with Yayoi Kusama’s work until someone recently brought it to my attention. I see my work as being relatively more personal while I see Kusama’s work as more pop art influenced. Some of your paintings and drawings are done on long rectangular sheets of paper that cascade down the wall and onto the floor. Could you explain why you use these long sheets of paper, and what it means for your overall artistic design? Kim: I see my scroll series as a record of the energy that I produce at the very moment of creation. It records my personal time and space, as well as my raw emotions; excitement, anxieties, regrets, hope, frustration, shame, guilt and letting go of things. As writers use old-fashioned typewriters to tell their stories, I leave my own traces of being in a timely-manner on these 10 yard-long paper rolls. You say that you use blood and water drops in your paintings, which “…implies both the principles of Yin and Yang, co-exist[ing] in one body rather than staying separated from another.” Could you explain where this idea originated and how you obtain and work with these elements? Kim: Symbolic circle images of blood and water drops are used as elements that recreate a womb environment, a mysterious universe. Life is a repetition of cycles so birth is not the beginning of life and death is not the end of life either. It’s a non-stop evolutionary cycle and everything co-exists as one to accomplish particular purposes. In this dimension, small circles join with larger circles and their shadows become unified, as particles join one another and create the whole universe altogether. If you were a critic looking at your own work, how would you describe and analyze it? Kim: I would describe my work as vaguely sensual, obsessively organic, and oddly alive. The series of abstract drawings capture the vital energy of all living beings as if they were seen through microscopic scanning. It captures the enormous amount of potential energy waiting patiently in the womb but with this very calm atmosphere. What artists do you currently follow and what do you find interesting about them/their work? Kim: I think one of great artists ever lived in this planet is Sol Lewitt. I am always amazed by how he could create something so immense with simple tools like a pencil, marker, crayon and ruler. He is a great mathematician, alchemist, and of course genius. Do you have any upcoming shows in New York? Kim: I am in a traveling exhibition that is about to end its tours and early next year I will be in a group exhibition at the Troy Arts Center, New York. - Article by Justine Chausson</image:caption>

<image:caption>Reaching for ‘Residue’ There are more gulfs among the drawings in “Residue,’’ a juried show featuring 16 artists, chosen from more than 400 applicants by curator Steve Holmes. The exhibit stretches the meaning of residue too far, beyond the trace a pencil leaves and into conceptual art and tales of love. Such is the struggle with a juried show: Works are often chosen in part because they’re disparate, and then the organizer has to somehow tie them together. Still, there are some terrific drawings here. Sky Kim’s automatic drawing “Untitled 4’’ unfurls on an orange scroll that rolls onto the floor. She writes over it in red with great striated, biomorphic loops and coils that caress the eye. Elise Kaufman’s delicate townscape “Ghost Estate, Ennis, Co. Clare,’’ made with puddles of India ink on non-absorbent paper, swims like a mirage; Colleen Kiely’s graphite “School Bus,’’ showing the square rear of the bus trundling into the distance, has a similar mournful quality. Thomas Duncan’s marvelous untitled drawings, made with infinitesimal marks, are gorgeous blends of static and snow. They converse with Irene Clark’s “Morphic Resonance - Bird Migration,’’ in pastel and charcoal, which captures the swift, agitated momentum of birds swarming against a gray sky. Two artists hit the residue theme on the mark: Jillian Clark’s “Charming the Multiples,’’ an installation of drawings made with snapped string coated in chalk, shimmies in ghostly verticals and horizontals over three walls, leaving breaths of blue and purple dust on the floor. And Eric Sweet’s spare, heartbreaking “Ideal City (Birkenau)’’ features ghostly impressions in paper of a scale model Sweet made of the Nazi death camp, brought into chilly relief with white-blue LED lights. The new media works fall flat. Billy Friebele’s drawings juxtaposing GPS mapping lines with video of locomotion has good conceptual underpinnings - our movements are being monetized. But it’s all idea; the resulting gesture is merely random. Jenny Herrick’s “60-Seconds’’ video of a man walking in a circle, videotaped from the center of the circle so he appears to walk in a straight line, is more about space, performance, and landscape than it is, ultimately, about line. <image:title>Press - Artefuse - Leaps into the Void: Group Show at Garis and Hahn Gallery By Daniel Gauss On 06/22/2014</image:title>
<image:caption>The abstract patterns that were often displayed among depictions of wild animals, in ancient cave art, had been a real mystery to anthropologists for generations. Then, one fine day, an anthropologist in Africa was allowed to drink a hallucinogenic drug while entering into a trance induced by chanting, drumming and dancing. He soon realized that one aspect of his inner visions was a period of time in which he visualized the same types of abstract patterns he had seen in the famous caves in Europe dating back 30,000 years. The patterns that had puzzled anthropologists had been painted by shamans who had witnessed them in trances. These shamans recorded these patterns seen in their inner journeys. So the origins of human art are not just found in paintings of bison or deer – some of the first paintings are recordings of alternative inner experiences. These alternative experiences form the origins of human religious experience and they have not necessarily been superseded by anything better. The current show at Garis and Hahn is subtitled: “Shamanism, Meditation, Transcendence, Oblivion” and each artist contributes pieces referring to the tradition of religious experience based on techniques that alter one’s connection to the outer world to refocus on and change the inner world. Sky Kim, Untitled, 2014 Sky Kim’s pieces reflect her belief in ‘cell memory’ which is also an ancient, pre-scientific concept. Cell memory is the belief that every cell of an organism contains the basic character of the entire organism. In Kim’s pieces she repeats basic patterns to create organic-looking objects and seems to me to be investigating what might be potential emergent properties or stagnant properties of the complexly organic. An emergent property is when something unexpected and new just pops up from older material or combinations. If you wait long enough and pack enough cells into a small area will the spiritual emerge? Was Buddha right – do all organisms contain a Buddha nature? What emergent meta-biological potential is there in bundles or repetitions of cells? Kim also paints huge scrolls of repeating small spheres in circular patterns which have to remind one of Kusama. The ever-repeating patterns are a type of surrogate for the eternal. They become a type of idealized concept we can superimpose on a universe of decay and decomposition. Finally, in the basement of the gallery is an installation piece by Joe Nanashe. Ladders are bundled together and turned upside down, pointing toward the ground. The legs of the ladders point upward in a fan-like pattern. Keyboards are stacked in squares and the room is filled with a static noise. The entire area is lit up by a row of intense white light. It’s as if we are witnessing the aftereffects of some spiritual catastrophe in which the right has become wrong and the wrong has become right. The ladders should be pointing upward, the way basic symbols of spiritual evolution should be – ascending – and the keyboards should be accessible and producing pleasant music. Yet, maybe it’s better for the ladders to be turned toward the earth and for the room to be filled with discordant sounds (the type of sound that can induce a trance and not merely entertain) – as this was the origin of human religious inclinations. Everything was geared to the earth and embracing a life committed to one’s community’s place in the natural environment was originally equated directly to the spiritual. <image:caption>Sky Kim is a New York City-based artist originally from South Korea. In her pieces she often repeats basic patterns, possibly investigating the need, possibility or hope for spiritually emergent qualities appearing through this process. Kim also approaches sensual energy as an essential part of the human experience – sensuality as a type of energy or vibrational waves. I discovered your work at a 2014 group show at Garis & Hahn called ‘Leaps into the Void: Shamanism, Meditation, Transcendence, Oblivion’. This was an amazing show featuring artists who referenced alternative belief systems, many of which were grounded in ancient religious or philosophical systems. I was attracted to your commitment to pre-modern ideas like 'cell memory' and reincarnation. How did you develop these interests/beliefs? My inspiration comes from my philosophical belief in reincarnation and, on an unconscious level, my work is largely influenced by the loss of my twin sister at birth. This early separation is probably the source of emptiness that I always feel inside. Growing up, it was tough for a little girl to deal with this uneasy feeling. I had to find a way to fill the hollowness in my heart. I tried to figure out why I was here, in this lifetime. There were so many ‘whys’ in my little head and this made me look everywhere for an answer. I began to dig into spiritual books, religions, new age beliefs, etc. I finally found a partial but critical answer to most of my questions in reincarnation, which I thought explained many incomprehensible phenomena in life. This realization influenced my work a great deal. I began to use the repetition of circles and lines to create patterns that represent the wheel of life: reincarnation. I believe that remembering my twin sister in my art is the only way for me to complete my being, as every old and new cell of my body remembers every minute I was with her in the womb. My memory of her in the long but also brief time we spent together in the womb, which was the only time that we were together, has entirely prevailed in my unconsciousness. What about folks who do not believe in reincarnation - can they derive anything meaningful from your work? Whether they believe in reincarnation or life just being a one-time thing, they shouldn’t have any problem appreciating the meditative patterns that are both optically three dimensional and still at the same time. I’ve encountered a number of viewers who don’t consider themselves spiritual but told me they sensed an enormous energy emitting from my work which had a soothing and healing effect on them. That Garis and Hahn show also partly highlighted the cognitive/emotional processes involved in the creation of works requiring time-consuming repetition. Can you tell me a bit about your mental state as you create? My work comes from stillness and everything within. Out of that stillness, a certain impulse comes, like every sound comes from stillness. I meditate on the nothingness and then something wants to be born and expressed. I honor that quiet space. It’s a deeper space where your mind is no longer operating, but just being in your consciousness. I create a sacred space, a place where I can have a dialogue with my true self--my higher self underneath my humongous ego. I own that moment and that uninterrupted time and space is one of the key ingredients of my creation. You can’t rely on your thinking to produce something powerful and original. You simply focus on the energy of your present moment. It’s natural for negative thoughts to crawl into your mind but you don’t fight with them because whatever you fight against, you make it stronger. Doing isn’t enough, BEING is necessary. Artists need a lot of time alone. I simply BE in the present moment and enjoy whatever I have. Presence isn’t an old pattern. Instead, it’s eternally new and timeless. I complete my life at each moment in my studio since I have nowhere else to go but within. When I’m fully present at the moment, there’s enough of everything. When I know that everything is provided, I stop competing for love, power or whatever I wish to obtain. Then I experience abundance, a pool of energy and inner peace. That is when I’m ready to pick up my pencil. My studio practice is very meditative but also labor intensive as it requires both undivided focus and raised vibrations which create the work. Repeating patterns is like citing a mantra over and over again. Your visit to the Pyramid Lake Indian Reservation influenced a whole series of your pieces. How did that visit affect you? I’m very sensitive to the energy field in places, especially when I visit sacred spots where there is believed to be a strong vortex. I feel the energy with all my senses and I even physically get affected sometimes which is not always pleasant. I felt the presence of strong energy from the red rocks in Sedona, Arizona and the Chichen Itza Pyramid site in Yucatan, Mexico. Since I try to contain condensed energy in each circle and fluid line in my work, I’m genuinely drawn to those ancient sites and natural formations which have become a source of my inspiration. There was a time that your work was considered to be too sexual. Can you tell me about this event? I was showing my work with the Victory Arts Project in Jersey City. My watercolor paintings and marker drawings were displayed on 5 tall wooden panels in the large glass windows of the building. Since the show room was located in a financial district, my work became controversial. To me the images were subtle and not provocative, but to some people they were too sexual to show in public. This was all happening while I was in the UK. Upon my return, I discovered that 3 of 5 works were covered with sheets of blank paper. I didn’t understand why I was getting such reactions when there were gigantic billboards nearby that exposed half-naked blondes in embarrassingly seductive poses that never seemed to bother anyone. I was amazed by their double standard. Art and sex have always been tied together, probably because sexual desire seems the perfect analog for spiritual desire and the beauty of sexual union mirrors the beauty of the union between desire for something more and its fulfillment. Can you tell me the extent that you are exploring sex or desire in your work? Images in my work are often feminine, delicate, untouchable, venerable and sensual with a strong sense of sexuality. I explore the similarities in the scope of birth and life with the images of flowers and seeds that are associated with a fertility, germination, growth and evolution. I create these images to get a sense of uncanny sensuality but in a more playful, teasing way. As a result, the organic, metaphoric images are not overly but they are obviously sexual, and at the same time they are somewhat enigmatic, elusive and ambiguous; just enough to stimulate your imagination. I often use the symbols of stamen and pistil to illustrate what we once were in the womb, the beginning point of life and of my personal memory of my twin sister who shared my time in my mother’s womb and with me relied on a single umbilical cord. The image of seeds, flower petals and blood on the surface, whose personality also implies both the principles of Yin and Yang, the male and female energies, co-exist in one body. They shouldn't be interpreted as a neutral gender; instead they should be understood as the life energy that a fertilized egg newly acquires, beyond the visual, sexual differences of the flesh. There are two different energies that co-exist, but their essential natures don't blend together into a total stranger. I have explored issues around the representation of sexuality within a personal and emotional context. I focus on developing new aesthetics to represent a female body with the inclusion of the masculine point of view. Working together with drawing, painting, performance and sculpture, my work has often played, not without humor, on the ambivalence of the feminine and masculine relationship in terms of sexuality. In my constant work on the interrelationship between the masculine and the feminine, I manage to render the interchangeability of sexes and of sexuality by deceiving conventions. The complete, vital form is favored not in order to discover who I am, but to create myself anew. Do you still enjoy using scrolls? Why did you start? I try to produce at least one scroll piece a year. It’s a time consuming process which requires serious commitment and dedication. One day, about 10 years ago, I was going to cut the paper after I finished a regular sized painting on a paper roll but didn’t want to stop the flow I was feeling. I decided to paint the whole 30 foot-long paper roll just to record the whirlpool-like creative energy I was having at the moment of creation. Were you influenced by other artists who use repetition and/or alternative belief systems? With which artists of the past do you identify with? Oddly enough, if there’s anyone whom I feel connected to, it would be Basquiat. Our styles are totally different, almost opposite from each other, but I’ve always thought that he is like my soul mate in my creative practice. Many people think that my work is precisely calculated and meticulously planned and controlled but that’s not the case at all. It’s all done by free hand, automatically drawn without knowing where to go next. My only belief system is my own sense of intuition which is the strong driving force of my creation from start to finish. During a time of social crisis, do you think an artist should attempt to make some type of social statement? Do you consider aspects of your work political? Are you interested in politics? When wasn’t there a time of social crisis in the history of mankind? Somewhere around the globe, innocent children, women and men are suffering from horrendous violence right this moment. I’m interested in both politics and social issues and I believe that artists should always be alert. Whether or not they should make political, social statements in their work should depend on how literal they want their voice to be heard. I strongly feel responsible for all the issues we’re facing today because we’re co-creating every moment, every reality together as one massive collective consciousness. My work shows who I am, every inch of me, but it’s not necessarily showing any particular social issue in a literal context. All the issues that I want to address are rather dealt with energetically. I’m a transmitter that generates and transmits vibrational waves carrying messages and signals through a constant tug of war embedded in the organic undulations in my work.
